A dozen gamers met this month, including Sarah who has previously attended International Tabletop Day, but this was her first monthly NGG - hope you had fun
Some tough game decisions this month eventually resolved into 3 tables. The first had Steve, Val, Kieran, Sarah & Marcus trying Snow Tails, a husky racing game. As well as the track and the dogs, control of the dogs seems to be via card selection. I heard this got tricky around corners and it was difficult to master, but no less fun for trying! Marcus came out top dog and moved on to try X-Wing Miniatures with James, who seems to have mastered the art of dog-fighting in space. Spurred on by the success of the base game, this month James brought a few expansion packs, so the Most Wanted, B-Wing and Y-Wing ships were doing battle this time.
While Snow Tails was in play, Laura, James and Dave went for popular blagging game, Sheriff of Nottingham. Laura must have the gift of the gab and managed to win her victory by quite a margin! Laura and Dave then moved on to join Steve, Sarah and Kieran for the card-war Arctic Scavengers. Battling for survival, Kieran clawed his way to the top of the apocalyptic pile to win the game.
While all the above was going on, Paul J was excitedly sharing one of his recent birthday presents (happy 60th Paul!) with Paul C, Nathan and Matt. Through the Ages is a game by renowned Czech designer Vlaada Chvatl and has a civilisation theme a bit like 7 Wonders, but it really ups the ante. We played the basic game and that was difficult enough, but once we'd spent an hour with it, the game became smoother and we got into our stride. Card drafting keeps a selection of technologies, wonders and leaders moving at a pace and rapidly getting cheaper before dropping off the end of the board and out of our grasp. Resource management is used to balance workers and food to produce science, military might and so on. Points are gained slowly through the game and rapidly in an end game summary of how well everyone did. In the end it was only fitting that Paul J did the best out of all of us.
Another fun month. Thanks to everyone who came along and see you next month!
