Last Saturday six of us gathered and had a great day that involved breaking out one of the industry's biggest games and delving into a space opera of politics, trade, conquest and more. There were a lot of rules to absorb, but Laura and James did a sterling job of guiding us through them. For those of you intrigued to find out more, photo's have been uploaded and here's a review by James...
Thanks again to Laura for kickstarting this event - I think everyone who came had a good time and is eager to play more long games.
The next one is scheduled for October 31st (again in Nexus from 11.30) - time to get your spooky on! The game poll has given an indication of the favourites to play (and I'm sure a re-run of Twilight Imperium will be on the cards at some point, so we can attempt to actually get through a full game), so keep an eye out for more info on that soon.

On Saturday a few of us got together for the first long gaming day, meeting in the nook at Nexus at 11.30 for a game of Twilight Imperium brought by me and Laura (borrowed from a friend of ours). We were the only two to have played this game before, so it took quite a long time to get everyone set up and taught the rules, meaning the game didn't start fully until a few hours later. Twilight Imperium is the kind of game where the rules seem very dense and complicated at first, but once everyone knows what they are doing it can flow surprisingly fast.
Twilight Imperium is a sci-fi strategy game where each player takes the role of an alien race trying to take over a recently-fallen galactic empire. I played as the sneaky and deceptive Naalu, Laura was the aggressive Barony of Letnev, Nathan played the defensive space-turtle Xxcha, Marcus controlled the dreadnought-loving cyborg L1Z1X Mindnet, Matt was the strategic Yssaril Tribes and Val played the Hacan traders.
The game got off to a slow start as everyone was learning the rules and expanding their empires slowly. I opened hostilities with a futile attack on Nathan that got both of our small fleets destroyed and left him unlikely to trust me later in the game. The first meeting of the galactic council erupted into arguments when me and Laura proposed a law that would lose Matt and Marcus a planet each, which then backfired when everyone else sided against us and voted that we should lose planets instead. Things then stayed peaceful for a while as everyone built up their fleets, with Laura making a bold move to take and fortify the capital planet in the centre of the board while Marcus built a very impressive fleet of dreadnoughts. With time running out (the nook had been booked by others for 5 o'clock) Marcus attacked Matt with overwhelming force and Laura and Nathan attacked me. Luckily for me and Matt, we ran out of time before we could each be destroyed. Laura, Matt and Marcus were tied for victory points so overall victory went to Marcus for having the most planets.
With the game cut short (we played for five and a half hours, but it could easily have gone on for another three or four) and the sheer amount of rules to learn, it was hard for the players to really get a feel for the scope of the game, but I think the response was mostly positive. It's hard to find time to play a game like this, so I'm glad that we got to introduce everyone to it.
