The second long games day event was settled on as Arkham Horror, fitting with the Halloween theme of the day. A board game based on the mythos created by H P Lovecraft, the theme is strong. It's a co-operative game where everyone plays an 1920s investigator trying to collectively close gates to other worlds, keep the town of Arkham as monster-free as possible and ultimately banish the Ancient One back to a realm beyond time and space to leave mankind alone for another millennia or so.
With 6 players today was a very enjoyable day. After a whistle-stop tour through the very many rules, everyone had a rough idea of what was supposed to be going on, cemented then by the experience of the first couple of turns. With the rules under our belts, minds slowly started to turn to strategy and the various different skills of each investigator become clearer and better understood.
There were quite a few funny experiences in game thoughout the day, including street urchins tapping us on the shoulder to say things like "excuse me miss, I think you've dropped this axe"; James taking on (and defeating) 3 monsters in a single battle; and my good self, supported by Laura, having a movie-worthy fight - a magician riding across town on his motorcycle to play a magic flute to defeat 4 monsters in one magical blow, with the help of cavalry sabres and a .45 revolver! Fabulous fun.
Although Arkham was overrun with monsters once, we managed pretty well to keep the monsters at bay from that point on. That enabled us to collectively close and seal 5 gates. We needed 6 and just ran out of time as the Nexus Nook was booked from 4.30 today. Given another half hour we were all confident we would have got the 6th seal and banished Nyarlothotep, the Ancient One of this particular game, for the win.
But that's two long games days down and two long games not quite finished! I loved it and I hope my fellow investigators did too - feel free to comment below
