All,
This year's ITD is on April 28th. I've already contacted Nexus to book the nook as per usual. However, they already have a group that have booked the nook every Saturday afternoon 1:30-4:30. So that puts pay to that for a location. I'm open to suggestions, but currently have 3 proposals:
1. Do nothing as a group, it'll get too complicated - we can try to find events organised by other groups instead 2. Meet in another location, such as Fanboy3 or Ziferblat (could get expensive for a day's outing, and would need to ask permission first - Fanboy 3 could be busy that day...) 3. Meet in each others homes for smaller gatherings and post pictures and stories on here to share in it together virtually
Any other suggestions? Any thoughts?

Sounds good but few questions. What is it? Lol is it a normal gaming session but shared as part of a social media thunder clap type thing?
I could maybe ask about hosting here. Planned in advance it should be an option. For the $ options do we know what sort of price?
Also in terms of option 1, do we know what alternatives are on?

I think it's worth keeping our ears to the ground to see what other groups are doing. I know what Matt is saying about Fanboy 3 being an unlikely venue on that day. Meeting in each others homes isn't a bad idea and I am sure I would be able to accommodate ppl at mine that day...the only downside is that we can't all game together which is a shame when our group clicks so well; and then there is the tricky decision of who goes where which I suppose would just have to be decided by nearest convenient location. Even so...perhaps option 3 would be for the best, would be fun to compare experiences later.
What about choosing the games to play in advance? Is that planning too meticulously? Or would it be better to just flow with the mood of the day? Maybe if we were gaming in different locations we could propose an itinerary with estimated time at each location to help everyone decide where they want to go. Though this might be overcomplicating things...
Plenty of time to decide anyway...good shout thinking ahead Matt!

International Tabletop Day is something that the online channel Geek & Sundry invented about 5 years ago. It's a day they nominate (usually the last Saturday in April) where people everywhere are encouraged to play tabletop games. It really is quite international and even some astronauts have joined in from ISS! NGG have taken part as long as it has existed and we usually book the Nook for the day. We bring even more games than usual, both for choice and so that everyone visiting there cafe that day can see just what choice there is in games - it's a good opportunity for people to see it's not just monopoly and chess... We've had a few people find the games group this way and been encouraged by public gaming.
Groups taking part can register their event on Geek & Sundry's special website - that helps people search for what's on near them. So we can always have a look nearer the time and see who in Manchester has registered. But I hear of more and more gaming groups across the city, so would expect there to be a few choices if we wanted to join another group.
ZIferblat have rooms to hire, but I don't know how expensive they are (and I'm sure many other venues offer the same room for hire facility). However, to just rock up to the cafe and use that as a punter would cost each person 8p/min (but all the food and drink is then free). That soon mounts up.
As for Fanboy 3, I'm not sure the cost, but believe there is one - others have tried gaming here already... how did that work out? My main reservation is that a boardgaming cafe on International Tabletop Day will be busy...

We've always celebrated ITD but it's really been just an excuse to meet up and have a chance to play longer games (though not everything has been a long game). What it has done for us is given a focus well in advance which we put in our diaries and commit to, on the principle that we are "sharing" in something larger than ourselves. Recently when we tried to organise ourselves after Christmas it didn't happen because it was too close to time to get planned properly. That showed that we need to organise ourselves.
In a real sense we don't need ITD to play games. But without it we don't get organised as we haven't committed. Something else turns up.
Playing at people's houses is possible but we couldn't all go to the same one realistically. And the geography of where we all are - all over the place - doesn't help. But it's viable. We're still celebrating the day and having fun and we don't all have to be in the same place. But it does take organising beforehand and yes I think it means choosing the games before the day, not rocking up and making it up on the spot. The advantage is that if that's done, we'll get to discuss and choose games we really want to play.
Fanboy 3 will probably have something on but there will be lots of other people there? And it doesn't have infinite space (I assume).
I wondered about where else we could hire and I don't mind paying to do so. But 8p/min sounds like a lot whatever might be thrown in with it. That would let us in for about £25 each for an afternoon which is a hell of a lot, frankly. By contrast Midcon, say, is like £15 for a weekend (two and a half days). Are there pubs with upper rooms who like encouraging Saturday drinkers? All the gaming groups I've belonged to have met in pubs. The pubs have seen a rise in sales!
It does seem worth seeing who is organising something in Manchester and seeing if we can get there, should make new friends that way too.

Paul makes some good points there. I think this ITD is a good opportunity to kind of 'format' how we organise our long games days from now on. It's nice to fly casual but it can mean we never actually get a takeoff at all, and there are other advantages to choosing the games in advance (like giving ppl the opportunity to view Youtube vids and such to refresh on rules, or to see if it is even the type of game for them). I never thought of hiring a pub room, or seeing who else is hiring who has room for us. Good idea. And also... Beer!

Would someone be willing to see what options we have for a city-based meet up on ITD? If we can grab a pub room for free because we'll be eating and drinking there all day, that would probably be ideal. But if there's a nominal fee, I'm sure we could all accommodate splitting that between us (e.g. £25 room hire would probably only be a couple of quid each) And yes, I would recommend for those who want to get a long-games day going you don't need ITD to do that - just start a thread on here and plan a month in advance to give people time to spot the thread and negotiate time and place around their various commitments. It's a shame that the Nexus Nook isn't going to be a venue we can use any more (at least, not until that repeating booking stops), so finding a new Saturday/Sunday venue is going to be a thing we need to do anyway. And there's nothing stopping these becoming a regular thing as well, if people have the time and desire for it - I'm afraid I don't, so won't get involved, but please feel free to organise yourself into a whole host of gaming meet ups and fun times

I wish I could contribute anything here but I live ina tiny house already packed with animals and people and know of no venues where anything like this is possible, but I would be willing to contribute to the cost of hiring a venue if it is within my means

I've had a change of answer from Nexus - they've given us priority and booked the Nook for the whole day for us! Hurrah, International Tabletop Day is on

Woot Woot! So do we just need to try and agree games now? :-) I can put colditz forward. I'm also up for any long games seems there's some well known options so happy to follow there too.
